National Assembly in NigeriaPro-leadership lawmakers of the All Progressive Congress (APC) are optimistic that the election of principal officers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives will hold peacefully on Tuesday.
After a meeting between the APC lawmakers and the leadership of the party on Monday, Senator Kabir Marafa and Honourable Pally Iriase, told Channels Television that they were hopeful of an election that would be acceptable to all lawmakers of the party.
They said the ‘seeming crack’ in the party after some lawmakers walked out during the party’s mock election for the leadership of the two chambers at the weekend was not unusual in politics.
“We are going to agree. By tomorrow you will see the work of God. We will not have any problem. At the meeting, the leaders urged us to do what is right and give the people the much needed change they voted for,” Senator Marafa said.
The aggrieved lawmakers had walked out of the mock election, saying the election was not in line with the constitution of Nigeria or that of the party.
But Senator Marafa said what the party had done was right and in the interest of the unity of the party.
Senator Ahmed Lawan was elected in the mock election as the candidate of the party to vie for the position of the Senate President. The election was also boycotted by Senator Bukola Saraki, who is also vying for the position.
The aggrieved lawmakers are insisting that they will only take part in the election of the principal officers that is in line with the party’s constitution.
