JONATHAN NOMINATES OBANIKORO AND 7 OTHERS FOR SENATE

Jonathan nominates
Senate yesterday formally received President Goodluck Jonathan’s request for the screening and confirmation of seven ministers, including the immediate past Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.

Others nominated by the president included two former senators; Patricia Akwashiki from Nasarawa State and Joel Danlami Ikenya from Taraba State.

The president, in a February 16 letter to the Senate President, David Mark, urged the Senate to treat the exercise with its ‘traditional prompt attention’.

Others are Prof. Nicholas Akise Ada from Benue State, Col. Augustine Ojwudiri Akobindu (retd) from Abia State, Mr. Fidelis Nwankwo, an engineer, from Ebonyi State, Mrs Hauwa’u Lawan from Jigawa State and Mr. Kenneth Kobani from Rivers State.

Patricia Akwashiki is to replace former Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, Nicholas Ada to replace former Minister of State, Trade and Investment, Samuel Ortom while Akonbundu, the nominee from Abia State is to replace former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Emeka Wogu.

The Jigawa nominee, Hajia Lawan, will replace former Minister of Education, Prof. Ruquayyat Ruffai, Kenneth Kobani will replace former Minister of State for Education, Nyson Wike, while Senator Ikenya from Taraba State will replace former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Dahirus Ishaku.

Senate Spokesman, Eyinnaya Abaribe, told newsmen that the screening and confirmation would be done next week.

Meanwhile, there is opposition to the nomination of Senator Obanikoro. Immediately Mark read his name as the Lagos State nominee, shouts of ‘Again?’ ‘No! No!’ rent the chamber
